Alma Enterprises is run by a group of four curators who work collaboratively on the curation of all the exhibitions, talks and performances. Alma (formerly known as LAND) opened in October 2004 with Project
1 and shows a programme of experimental and interdisciplinary
exhibitions and events, fore-grounding artists and curators who
work critically with contemporary ideas and art forms.
Alma aims to explore its position as an independent space on the corner of Vyner Street by fore-fronting emerging ideas, practices and art forms and providing a space for experimentation and collaboration.
The programme has included a series of exhibitions exploring sound
in its different manifestations: Arsenal:
artists exploring the potential of sound as a weapon, guest
curated by Ellen Mara De Wachter; ‘Six Sites for Sound’,
a collaboration with curatorial group dosensos, featuring Jem
Finer’s ‘Slowplayer’; and When
the time traveller kills their grandmother, a multidisciplinary
collaboration between international artists, guest curated by Fritz
Welch, which featured an electronically-driven sound/noise sculpture,
performances and a special edition of The Vacuum magazine.
Having previously curated screenings of artists’ film and
video work in the UK and USA, including When
You Least Expect It at the Bareiss Gallery, New Mexico and London
Zero Zero at the Gasworks (as LAND), Alma continues to foreground
artists working with video. Recent shows include the video installation
We make our own television with Jennet
Thomas and Paul Tarragó; Janie
1978-1982 by New York video artist Laura Parnes; UK premieres
of emerging video artist Manuel Saiz
including ‘Specialized Technicians Required: Being Luis Porcar’
and ‘Parallel Universes Meet at Infinity’ and Charlie
Tweed’s video manifestations of his alter ego in Let’s
Start Again.
Performance and interdisciplinary collaboration have been key areas
of exploration and Alma has worked with a number of artists to develop
and exhibit different forms of practice. P1orn are continuing to
evolve a collaborative partnership that has developed through a
series of residencies. These have resulted in durational performances
and lectures, such as Tension Fold
and exhibited work I am Sam.
Will Hunt performed the premiere of
‘Again, Again, Again (If it’s funny once it’s
funny forever)’ in December 2004 in an evening of film screenings
and performances, and the Alma Enterprises
Community Choir provided a one-off rendition of a score of ”Worried”
in March 2006, devised by New York artist Chris Peck.
Alma have recently introduced a new residency programme for artists and curators. The first selected artists are Susannah Haddon and Katie Cuddon and their project 'World Without Tears'.
