Alma Enterprises Gallery is proud to present “A Day at the Races”, a solo show by artist Neil Hedger, to inaugurate the opening of Alma Enterprises’ new exhibition space in Glasshill Street, Southwark.
Influenced by the writing of the French Surrealist Georges Bataille, Hedger posits a contemporary form for the tradition of figure sculpture through his expressionistic practice and complex referencing of art history.
In relation to Alma’s new manifesto which encourages artists to directly engage with our space, Hedger will be developing a newly commissioned piece of work over a 2 month period built from scratch within the gallery space itself. Hedger will be exploring a larger sculptural form from some of his recent works and this exhibition will mark an important new development in his work.
His use of plasticine and wax as the main materials for the work is crucial; cheap, unstable materials, one associated with being the play-thing of young children; and used for making simple, happy animals.
For us Hedger’s work is appropriate to current cultural conditions with his vision of a lost Wolperdinger-like being that re-constitutes these materials to produce a highly sexualized and destructive form of many parts that has melted into its own excess.
We believe that this new work will exist as an inhabitation of sheer monumental artistic authority.
