Alma Enterprises presents 'One must be so careful these days', an exhibition of new film and video works by 7 artists and a series of newly commissioned performances.

Alma will be continuing their relationship with artists Brian Catling, Thomas Altheimer, Kim Noble, Jennet Thomas, Eleanor Morgan, Yaron Lapid and Charlie Tweed as well as exhibiting work by Ludo Mich, Emanuel Almborg and Kieron Dennis for the first time in the space.

Film and video works

Ludo Mich will be exhibiting his classic film ‘Saturnus’. Filmed with a self made fish-eye lens, ‘Saturnus’ remains one of the key works of Belgian underground cinema. Unknown pictures and sounds are received from space which show the bizarre life on one of the moons of Saturnus.

Jennet Thomas will be exhibiting ‘Sharony’. Two young girls dig up a microscopic woman in their garden and incubate her in their mouths, under their pillows and in their doll’s house (with it’s porn encrusted walls) in order to make her grow up faster.

Eleanor Morgan will be exhibiting her video installation ‘The Puffin Hunter’, a documentary film of her time with a puffin hunter as he lures, captures and kills puffins on a remote island.

Charlie Tweed will be showing ‘Man From Below - TV Episode 2’. Tweed’s absurdist alter ego the Man From Below makes himself into a ‘self sustainable system’ and heads south to launch his manifesto for ‘going below’.

Yaron Lapid will be exhibiting his video installation ‘The New Zero’. The work has been constructed from over five hundred photographs that the artist discovered in a demolished photographer’s studio in Jerusalem.

Kieron Dennis will be exhibiting his video ‘Dead Bikes’ where he combines photographic stills and text to create poetic and unexpected narratives about abandoned bikes.

Emanuel Almborg will be exhibiting his new video installation ‘The Other Man' - a factional portrait of one man and his double(s). The video takes its starting point in the life of Blackpool Robert de Niro look-a-like Graham, but intermingles with fragments of what seems to be a parallel and sometimes similar story.

Performance Programme

Alma has invited Brian Catling, Kim Noble and Thomas Altheimer to return with new works from Friday October 12th to Sunday October 14th.

Brian Catling will be performing 'AWOL' on Friday October 12th at 2pm. He will be returning to Alma, following an earlier chilling durational performance for It’s Just Bread in April, in which the gallery space, assorted props and his presence were transformed in to a psychological and physical manifestation of the East End gangland. Catling is a poet, sculptor and performance artist, currently working in video and live work. His recent solo show ‘Antix’ at Matt’s Gallery drew much critical acclaim. He has been commissioned to make solo installations and performances internationally.

Thomas Altheimer will be holding a 'Europe 08: Rally in East London' on Friday October 12th at 6pm. The rally is in support of the European presidential campaign to take over the Whitehouse in 2008. This ambitious campaign is to back and assist a native-born American willing to pledge to run for president on a platform of European issues in 2008. Following on the London-bound fundraising footsteps of fellow candidates Guiliani, Clinton and Obama, Altheimer will be taking a break from the American campaign trail to shore up financial support from American ex-pats and Europeans in London.

Kim Noble will be doing a durational performance at Alma on Saturday October 13th and Sunday October 14th from 12pm to 6pm.

"There are quite a few things Kim Noble could have done for his multimedia durational performance..in the end he decided he wanted to help the audience out in some way. Warning: this performance contains an extract from The Power Of Love by Huey Lewis and The News."

Kim Noble works as an artist and as one half of experimental performance duo Noble and Silver. Noble and Silver won the Perrier Newcomers award at the Edinburgh Festival in 2000. In Spring 2001 they made a six-part series for Channel 4, (nobleandsilver):GET OFF ME, which deconstructed and re-presented six television genres. In 2002, nobleandsilver occupied Beaconsfield, a gallery in South London. In 2007 they were commissioned to re-stage their ground breaking show (nobleandsilver: Part 9) at the Soho Theatre. Kim Noble was also part of Alma’s ‘It’s just bread’ performance series in 2007.

Special Openings : Thursday October 4th - Alma will be open from 6-9pm for First Thursdays. Wednesday October 10th - Sunday October 14th - Alma will be open from Wednesday to Sunday during Frieze.
